Aug 30, 2010

Melbourne Airport welcomes Jetstar's announcement that the airline will significantly expand its domestic network with an extra 24 weekly services out of Melbourne to Adelaide, Brisbane and Newcastle by December this year.

From 31 October, Jetstar will increase services to Newcastle from 21 to 28 weekly, from 6 December frequency to Adelaide will be boosted from 11 to 21 services weekly, and from 10 December flights to Brisbane will be increased from 14 to 21 weekly.

The increased services from Melbourne will benefit Victorians with an additional 440,000 low fare seats per year.

Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff congratulated Jetstar on its decision to grow its operations.

"These new services are testament to the strong partnership between Melbourne Airport and Jetstar. From early December, Jetstar will operate 312 domestic weekly return flights from Melbourne Airport.

"The extra services will stimulate demand, provide additional choice and strengthen competition, bringing low cost travel within easier reach of more Victorians.

"Since commencing services in 2004, Jetstar have been a driving force behind the growth of tourism in Victoria. This is a major increase in capacity and good news for people employed in Victoria's tourism, hospitality, and related industries.

"Last week Jetstar announced it would increase frequency of services out of Melbourne to Cairns from next April. Earlier this year, Jetstar increased services to Cairns, Newcastle and the Gold Coast. In July, Jetstar commenced services to Brisbane and increased services to the Sunshine Coast and Townsville.

"This boost to domestic capacity follows Jetstar's recent announcements to increase services on international routes out of Melbourne to Auckland, Queenstown and Singapore from mid December."
