Melbourne Airport today welcomed Qantas' decision to increase A380 services from Melbourne following the delivery of their fifth and sixth A380 aircraft.
Qantas will commence A380 services on the Melbourne - London route once a week from January 18 next year and twice-weekly from 29 March 2010.
The popular Melbourne to Los Angeles route will also see an increase in A380 services from 29 March next year, increasing from two to three per week.
Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said "We are delighted to have additional A380 services on this extremely popular route out of Melbourne. The UK is one of our largest international markets and the extra capacity will provide more seats for business travellers as well as those visiting friends and family.
"This is a key achievement for Victoria, further cementing the collective strength of our State as a key tourism destination and Australian hub. We thank Qantas for their investment in Melbourne and their confidence in the Victorian market," he said.
Qantas this week also announced an increase to their domestic services out of Melbourne. Commencing next year, an extra three services per week to Adelaide, an extra one per week to Perth and extra capacity on the Melbourne-Brisbane route on six of its weekly services.
The extra services come at the end of a month which has seen the launch of three new international airlines, the opening of the first stage of Melbourne Airport's international terminal expansion and record passenger numbers for the airport.
"The Qantas announcement is further proof that Melbourne Airport's approach to keeping airline charges low and service levels high, really is working," Mr. Woodruff said.
