Melbourne Airport Emerging Australian Filmmaker Award
Melbourne International Film Festival, 2006
Q: Did you have any idea that you'd win the Melbourne Airport Emerging Australian Filmmaker Award?
JA: I was confident I had made a good film that I liked - I just didn't know if anyone else would like it. So I was more concerned about people understanding what I was trying to say than winning awards. The award itself was a very welcome surprise and has opened a lot of doors for me. Winning this award at the Melbourne International Film Festival makes people sit up and take notice.
Q: Why did you decide to become a filmmaker?
JA: Shortly after I watched The Godfather parts one and two that aired over a weekend on terrestrial TV when I was thirteen. I was hooked on the idea from then.
Q: What's special about the Melbourne International Film Festival?
JA: It's great to get like-minded people all together in Melbourne. It's not something that happens very often. You get to meet a lot of filmmakers some of whom become your friends for life.
Q: Who is your favourite Director?
JA: I'm a huge fan of early Martin Scorsese.
Q: Who or what inspires your work?
JA: I draw my inspiration from life. The best stories are the personal ones that only you could tell.
Q: Favourite film and why?
JA: Easy. Star Wars. I love that film because it reminds me of a time long ago... when I was kid and not so bloody serious.
Q: Best and worst things about being a filmmaker?
JA: Solving problems & solving problems. Filmmakers are equally cursed and blessed.
Q: Interests outside of movie-making?
JA: Long, long walks and Melbourne is the perfect place for it.
