$330m Expansion For Melbourne’s International Terminal

The combined prodjects
  • These projects combined will be one of the largest infrastructure investments to take place in Victoria over the next 5 years, employing approximately 1000 people.
  • This is the largest upgrade of the international terminal that has been undertaken since Melbourne Airport was opened.
  • There are three key objectives for the upgrades:
  1. Improve and expand processing and terminal facilities for passengers.
  2. Increase airline gate capacity.
  3. Upgrade the baggage system.
  • The combined total to be spent on these projects is more than $330m.
  • Works will be undertaken between 2007 and 2011.
  • These projects have been carefully planned to ensure little or no negative impact on passengers.
  • The combined constructions will add a total of approximately 25,000m2 to T2.
Passengers
Outbound processing November 2007 to May 2010
  • Increase space in the outbound passenger processing zone.
  • Improve efficiency of processing by reversing the order of screening/processing. Security screening will be undertaken before Customs, not after.
  • X-ray stations will increase from 6 to 10.
  • Customs desks will increase from 18 to 24.
  • This project will add approximately 3,000m2 of floor space to the T2 Departures level.
Lounge facilities November 2008 to December 2011
  • This is an entirely new retail precinct for international passengers. It will add more than 5,000m2 of additional space to T2, in conjunction with a major redevelopment of existing facilities.
  • Passengers will have unrivalled views of the airfield - 10 metre high glass walls looking straight out in the bustling airfield.
  • This project will add 50% more cafe, lounge and specialty store space to T2.
  • There will be at least 10 new retail outlets in the new area.
  • The area has been designed to incorporate some signature elements and design features of Melbourne distinct architecture.
Aircraft gates
Gate expansion February 2008 to August 2009
  • This project will add an entire new concourse to T2 which will look out over the airfield from the existing terminal 'satellite'.
  • This new concourse will add a 5 new aircraft parking locations, including 3 dual-level aerobridges that can accommodate an A380 'superjumbo' or two smaller aircraft.
  • The design has been focused on providing the best possible views/experience to the passenger. This area will feature clean lines and floor-to-ceiling windows. Passengers will be closer to the main North/South runway than they have ever been, and will be able to watch take offs and landings from up close.
  • Arriving passengers will also have a fantastic arrival experience - rather than simply 'walking the tunnel', they will now be part of the airfield action.
  • This will add more than 7,000m2 to Terminal 2.
Aircraft gates
Inbound November 2007 to December 2008
  • This expansion provides space for an extra 2 A380-capable baggage carousels. This expansion will enable us to deliver capacity well beyond 2015.
  • This project will increase space, and add a new state of the art baggage system to T2.
Outbound August 2010 to March 2011
  • Baggage throughout will be increased for outbound baggage by 50% - from 3000 bags per hour (current) to 4500 bags per hour (2012).
  • Will enable quicker delivery of baggage through to aircraft.
