FAQs about parking QR Codes

What is a QR code, what’s changed and why are you using them?

A QR code is a “quick response code” and it’s used to quickly retrieve information using smart phones. It looks a bit like a crossword puzzle but it’s a code that, in this case, will link your parking booking to our gates and let you in and out of the car park you have booked online. Like many modern airports around the world, we have introduced QR codes to make it easier and faster for travellers to book, pay, enter and exit our car parks.

Only online bookings will require a QR Code to enter and exit a car park. The QR code will be included in your booking confirmation email, as well as detailed instructions that will tell you how to enter the car park that has been booked.

Important: Your QR code will only work at the car park you selected when booking. Please follow the signs to your booked car park on arrival at the airport.

Can I use my credit card to enter the car park?

If you book online you cannot use your credit card to enter or exit any Melbourne Airport car park. You need to use the QR Code that we send on your confirmation email.

If you arrive at a Melbourne Airport car park without an online booking, you can enter the car park by tapping your credit card at the entry gate and then tap the same card again at the exit gate. You can also tap Apple Pay or Google pay at the entry gate machine.

What if I receive a QR code but accidentally use my credit card at the car park entry?

If you make an online booking, you will receive a QR code in your booking confirmation email or SMS. You must use this QR code to enter and exit the car park. If you accidentally tap a physical credit card at entry, the system will not recognise your booking and you may be charged drive up rates.

If this happens and you realise this mistake after you’ve entered the car park, all you need to do is press and hold the "Help” button on the exit machine. A friendly Customer Service team member will ask you for your booking reference number and will help clear up the error.

If you realise the error after you’ve exited and received your credit card statement, you can apply for a refund online here.

Important: Your QR code will only work at the car park you selected when booking. Please follow the signs to your booked car park on arrival at the airport.

I am unable to view my QR code when I forward my Booking Confirmation email. What should I do?

Android mobile users may experience difficultly when forwarding the Booking Confirmation or Booking Remainder emails that include your QR code, as the QR code may become detached.  To avoid any issues, we suggest Android phone users download the email, take a screen shot of the QR code and send it separately.

If you can't find or lose the Booking Confirmation email, you can resend it by searching for your booking on the "Manage My Booking" page or logging into your account.

Can I still drive up on the day I fly, or pick someone up, and park without a pre-booking?

Yes, you can still drive up on the day you fly or need to use the airport without a booking. We encourage travellers to book ahead to get the best rates. If you choose not to book online you will need to use a credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay to enter and exit a car park when you drive up on the day you fly. Simply tap your preferred payment method on the right-hand side of the entry gate machines where marked.

What happens if I forget or lose my booking confirmation?

You will need your QR Code to enter and exit the car park you booked, which will be included in the booking confirmation email we send to you. If you misplace the Booking Confirmation email, you can resend a copy by searching for your booking at "Manage My Booking" or by logging into your account.

If you need help when entering or exiting the car park, please press and hold the “Help” button on the gate machine and our Customer Service team will help.

Important: Your QR code will only work at the car park you selected when booking. Please follow the signs to your booked car park on arrival at the airport.

Can I use a credit card, Google Pay and Apple Pay to make a booking for Melbourne Airport Car Parks?

Yes. If you have made an online booking using a credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay, please use the QR code associated with the booking to enter and exit the car park.

Important: Your QR code will only work at the car park you selected when booking. Please follow the signs to your booked car park on arrival at the airport.

Can I use a credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay to drive up and enter a car park?

Only if you don't have a booking. When entering and exiting the car park, you have the option to use a credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay if you haven't already booked your parking online. Using a credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay at the entry and exit gates after already booking online and receiving a QR code will result in double charging.

What happens if I want to bring a different car to the one confirmed at booking?

It is important that the car registration on the booking is the same as the car you bring to a Melbourne Airport car park. If you bring a different car to the one in the confirmed booking, the system will not recognise your booking and you will be charged a second fee.

You can easily change the car registration linked to your booking by searching for your booking at Manage My Booking , or by Logging in to your account.

What happens if I stay beyond the booked exit time?

If you need to stay beyond your booked exit time, we offer a grace period of 2 hours for bookings over 4 hours. For bookings under 4 hours, a 1-hour grace period applies. If you're delayed returning to Melbourne, you can extend your parking booking online anytime after entering the car park and up until your booked departure time. Please note that Melbourne Airport’s online booking terms and conditions apply. Departing the car park after your confirmed exit time may incur Overstay fees based on drive-up rates, which can be found here.

To extend your booking online after arriving, simply click "Manage booking", enter your booking details, and specify your new exit date and time. The system will calculate any additional fees, and once payment is processed, you will receive an updated confirmation email with a new QR code for exit. To exit, just scan your QR code at the exit gate.

If you depart later than your booked exit time, scan your QR code at the exit gate. Any additional charges will be displayed on the machine. You can pay these charges using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a physical credit card.

What if I lose my phone with my QR code on it while I’m parked?

If you lose your phone or your QR code after you’ve parked, we are here to help. Make your way to your car and drive to the exit gate machine, press and hold the “Help” button. A Customer Service team member will be able to assist you.

What if I can’t find my QR code when I’m at the car park entry?

If you can’t find your QR code when you’re at the entry gate machine, press and hold the “Help” button and a Customer Service team member will be able to assist you. We recommend checking your email, SMS or digital wallet to make sure you have your QR code handy before leaving for the airport.

Will I get a reminder of my QR code?

You will receive your QR code in your booking confirmation, both online and by email. We will also send you a reminder email three days before you park with us. This email will include your QR code and will come from the email account [email protected]

During the booking process, you have the option to choose to receive your QR code via SMS. This free SMS will be sent to you approximately 4 hours before you are due to park with us and when it reaches you, it will come from a phone number that says "MelbAirport".

Important: Your QR code will only work at the car park you selected when booking. Please follow the signs to your booked car park on arrival at the airport.

What if I only want to use cash?

The global pandemic has necessitated organisations moving to cashless transactions. Melbourne Airport parking supports cashless transactions. In emergency cases, where cash is the only form of payment possible, you will need to collect a ticket on entry. To do this, you will need to speak to our customer service team by pressing the ‘Help’ button on the entry machines.

Before returning to your car, you will need to pay for your parking. This can be done by inserting your ticket into the "last chance to pay" machines and settle the outstanding amount. This paid ticket will then enable you to exit the car park. Should you encounter any difficulties during this process, you will need to speak with our customer service team. Just press and hold the “Help” button on the exit machines and they will guide you through exiting the car park.

I don’t have Apple or Google wallet on my phone to save my QR code. Can I still get in?

Yes. Once we send you your QR code via email and SMS, you can take a screenshot of it on your phone and save the QR code as a picture. Alternatively, you can download the email and, before heading to the airport, open the email on your phone to have the QR code readily available on the screen.

I don't have a smartphone. How can I park at Melbourne Airport after I've booked online?

If you have made an online booking and do not have a smartphone where you would save your QR code, our Customer Service team can help. When arriving at the entry gate of your booked car park, simply drive up to the entry gate, press and hold the "Help" button on the entry gate machine to speak to a Customer Service team member. Please have your booking reference number ready to quote to the team member. The booking reference number is located at the top right-hand corner of your Booking Confirmation email. The same procedure applies when exiting the car park.

What if I can’t find or didn’t receive my confirmation email that contains my QR code?

Occasionally our confirmation emails, sent from [email protected], can be inadvertently directed to your junk mailbox. If this is the case, you can go into the junk email folder, select the email which you want to make as Not Junk, go to the Home tab and click Junk>Not Junk. Then a “Mark as Not Junk” dialog box will pop up and you can check the “Always Trust” email from [email protected]

Also, if you opted to receive a free SMS reminding you of your booking, you will receive it approximately 4 hours before you arrive at Melbourne Airport, and the SMS will be sent to you from the phone ID “MelbAirport”.

If you do not receive your confirmation email and need your QR code, you can receive a new confirmation email by going to Manage Booking, select reminder and then add the email address you used to make the booking.
