Overview
Melbourne Airport is nearing completion of a new world class international baggage system which will transform the way bags are handled at the airport.
The new system, designed and manufactured by German logistics specialist Beumer Group, will bring real time bag tracking, enhanced security and more capacity to our baggage system when it opens in March 2026.
The $500 million project will support Melbourne Airport’s record international passenger growth while delivering some world class new features for passengers and airlines
Benefits Of The New System
International travel into Melbourne Airport is at record levels with more than a million passengers a month making their way through our international terminal.
To give us the infrastructure we need to welcome more international flights into Melbourne we are investing $500 million in a new world-class international baggage system.
The new system will more than more than double the airport’s current baggage handling capacity from 1,800 to over 4,000 bags per hour.
Enhanced bag tracking technology will mean fewer lost bags and more efficient operations, with every bag electronically paired to the tote it is carried in and tracked throughout the entire system from check-in to takeoff.
We’ve also built a new dynamic bag store facility able to hold up to 1400 bags before automatically dispatching them to our ground handlers when your plane is ready to load.
This automated bag store will allow us to let passengers check-in much earlier for their flights and in the future will enable true anytime check-in.
The latest bag screening technology will also be installed providing 3D imagery of all checked bags, enhancing safety and ensuring compliance with world’s best standards.
