The car parks and roads at Melbourne Airport are very busy this week

All car parks at Melbourne Airport are very busy this week and booking out fast. If you don't have a booking, consider alternate forms of transport to come to the airport. If you do have a booking, allow extra time to find a spot and have your QR code ready for a smooth entry. If using the Terminal 4 car park including pick up and drop off, please note Naarm Way is closed until mid November. To access the T4 car park, please exit the Tullamarine Freeway at Exit 18 on Mercer Drive, then turn right at the Airport Drive roundabout and follow the signs to the Terminal 4 car park. Proceed to Level 2 for drop-offs or Level 1 for pick-ups. Due to ongoing construction in the Terminal 1,2,3 car park pick up and drop off areas, passengers should plan for potential delays of up to an hour during peak times if you are being dropped off by a loved one, taxi or Uber.  Thank you for your patience while we are building your airport.

Overview

Melbourne Airport is committed to environmental sustainability and was the first major Australian airport to commit to a target of net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.

The use of renewable energy will play a key role in achieving this target. We have a goal of meeting half of our energy needs through on-site solar generation by 2030.

In 2021, we started operating  our first solar farm, a 12-megawatt (MW) facility at Oaklands Junction under the approach to the north-south runway. The solar farm is 16 hectares in size and is the largest solar installation at any airport in Australia.

In addition, all new commercial developments in our business park are structurally ready for solar to be installed on the rooftop.

Installing more solar

In 2023 we commenced construction on a second solar farm. The North Airfield solar farm will produce 7.5 megawatts of energy and will sit adjacent to our existing Oaklands Junction solar farm on the corner of Sunbury Road and Oaklands Drive. It will comprise around 20,000 solar panels.

How much power can be generated?

The two solar farms together will cover an area about the size of 40 soccer pitches.

When the second solar farm is completed, the two will generate 34 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy per annum and, together, provide approximately 40% of the airport’s total energy consumption needs. This is enough energy to power terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4.

When will the second solar farm be constructed?

Construction of the North Airfield Solar Farm began in late 2023 and is due to be completed by mid-2025.
