Bali on a budget!  Melbourne Airport welcomes Air Asia Indonesia

10 December 2025

Holiday makers to Australia’s most popular international destination will have access to a new low-cost option with Indonesia AirAsia announcing today it will commence flying from Melbourne to Bali next year.

Indonesia AirAsia will launch daily services between Melbourne Airport Bali and from the 21st of March using an Airbus A320 and adding an extra 130,000 seats annually.

Indonesia AirAsia plans to stand out from an already competitive field with special promotional fares from Melbourne to Bali set to be some of the cheapest in the market.

Indonesia is Australia’s number one international destination with more than 1.7 million outbound travellers annually. It is also one of the fastest growth leisure markets from Melbourne with outbound traveller numbers to September 2025 up 34% on the same period in 2019.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said the arrival of Indonesia AirAsia will provide holidaymakers with some great budget friendly fares and access to expanded destinations.

“Indonesia AirAsia’s fares will no doubt be competitive in this market, which is great news for holidaymakers looking to make their money fly further,” he said.

“Bali is the third busiest route out of Melbourne behind only Singapore and Auckland, so it’s great to see more choice coming into the market which will continue to put downward pressure on fares.

“There’s something for every type of holiday maker in Bali and it’s now cheaper to fly there than many domestic destinations.

“While Bali is a favourite with travellers Indonesia AirAsia has an extensive network across Indonesia and Asia which will make it easier for travellers to explore Bali and beyond.  Labuan Bajo, famous for great beaches and the Komodo dragon or through to Jakarta to explore the Java Island will prove popular connecting markets.”

Acting CEO of AirAsia Indonesia Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman said the new service would seamlessly connect travellers to major destinations across the AirAsia network.

“This strategic launch strengthens Indonesia AirAsia’s presence in Australia and will provide more flexible and value-driven travel options for Australians,” he said.

“While Bali is an Australian favourite, AirAsia’s extensive network and Fly-Thru service opens up opportunities for passengers to connect seamlessly to major destinations such as Phuket, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, without the need to collect baggage during transit.

“Travellers can also choose to explore more of what Indonesia has to offer with a wide range of domestic destinations.”
