Melbourne Airport and Brimbank City Council have reached an agreement to resolve legal proceedings in the Federal Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) related to the third runway approval.
Under the agreement, Melbourne Airport and Brimbank City Council will work together to deliver initiatives that support community wellbeing and deliver tangible benefits to the local community.
The third runway was approved by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government in September 2024.
Melbourne Airport will continue to work closely with local councils, including Brimbank City Council, throughout the delivery of the third runway and its approval conditions.
This includes developing a Noise Sharing and Airspace Concept Plan which will guide how aircraft noise is managed and shared across communities, including through the use of the restored east-west runway. It also includes designing and delivering Australia’s most comprehensive noise amelioration program for eligible homes and community facilities within the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast 25 contour and undertaking a long-term study into health impacts of aircraft noise before and after the introduction of the third runway.
The Federal Government has now approved the Terms of Reference for this world-first, long-term study.
Melbourne Airport Chief of Staff Justin Portelli said the airport’s success is intertwined with the local communities that surround it.
“We’re pleased to have reached an outcome that will support the local community,” he said.
“Our success is very much dependent on support from our local communities, with the majority of our 23,000-strong workforce coming from surrounding areas including Brimbank.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Brimbank City Council to support community health and wellbeing outcomes while delivering the third runway. This important project will drive economic growth and create jobs for Victorians. We stand by the conditions applied to the third runway project”.
