Overview
Melbourne Airport is Australia’s busiest international travel hub, with tens of thousands of passengers arriving and departing around the clock. But that volume also means the time it takes to move through the terminal can vary, from passport control to baggage claim and customs.
If you’re planning to drive in and park your car, knowing what to expect after your return helps you decide how long to park for and which option suits your timing best. So what does happen after you land, and how does that affect your parking choice?
What Happens After Landing at the Airport?
After touching down, there are a few steps to go before you exit the international terminal. These are standard for international arrivals, and depending on your flight and what you’re carrying, some might take longer than others. Here’s how international arrivals work:
- Incoming Passenger Card – You’ll be handed this form on the plane. It asks about what you're bringing in, including any animal products, plant material, cash over AUD 10,000, or anything bought duty free over the limit. You’ll need to fill it out before you get to border control.
- Immigration and Border Processing – At this point, your passport is checked. If you have an ePassport, you can head through a SmartGate kiosk for quicker clearance. Otherwise, you’ll go to a manual desk. Either way, Australian Border Force officers are there to guide you through.
- Baggage Claim – After passport checks, head to the carousel area to collect any checked bags. Your flight number will show on overhead screens, and there are trolleys and places to sit while you wait.
- Biosecurity and Customs Check – Before you reach the Melbourne Airport Arrivals Hall, you’ll pass through customs and border protection. Here, a customs officer may ask about anything you’ve declared. Declared items might be checked, and prohibited items will need to be surrendered.
How Long Does It Take to Get Through Customs at Melbourne Airport?
There’s no set processing time because every international arrival is different. Most travellers clear customs within 60 to 90 minutes after their international flight lands, but that can change depending on how busy it is and what you’ve brought in.
A few factors can affect how long it takes, including:
- Time of day – Morning peaks (especially 5 AM to 10 AM) are usually busier
- Arrival volume – Multiple international flights landing close together can increase wait times
- Checked baggage – If you’ve got more than a carry-on, waiting at baggage claim adds time, especially if your bags come out later in the sequence
- Biosecurity declarations – Declared goods may need to be inspected, which can delay your exit from the terminal
How Does Customs Timing Affect Your Parking Plans?
If you’re parking at the airport for an international flight, it’s worth thinking about what happens after your return, not just before you take off. Clearing customs can take time, especially during busy periods. Traffic can also build up around the Pick Up and Drop Off zones, adding time on both ends of your journey.
Leaving extra time in your parking booking helps. It gives you flexibility if things take longer, and it also means you’re not rushing out of the car park or cutting it close to avoid extra charges.
If you book parking online, there’s more good news. Melbourne Airport includes a built-in grace period. You’ll get up to two hours extra on either side of your booked time for stays over four hours. That buffer can make all the difference if your flight lands late or if you need a few extra minutes to get through the Arrivals Hall. You can also extend your booking online at any time before your scheduled exit time.
Which Onsite Parking Options Are Available At Melbourne Airport?
With the time spent clearing customs, collecting bags and exiting the terminal, it helps to choose a parking option that gives you enough room to move, without cutting it close. Choose from our range of onsite parking options to match your trip.
Here’s a quick guide to what’s available:
- Value Car Park: Best suited for longer trips, this open-air car park is Melbourne Airport’s most affordable option. It has entrances on Mercer Drive and Airport Drive, with a free bus service running every 15 minutes, around the clock. The bus stops are near Terminal 1, which is ideal if you’re arriving on a Qantas domestic flight or returning from an international trip via Terminal 2. The Terminal 4 stop is best if you’re landing with Jetstar, Rex, Link Airways or Virgin Australia into Terminals 3 or 4.
- Value Express: Offered during peak periods like school holidays, Value Express is a seasonal valet-style service within the Value Car Park. If you’ve booked it online or upgraded on arrival, you’ll have dropped your car near Bus Stop B, so no need to remember where you parked. After your flight, just catch the bus from Terminal 1 or Terminal 4 back to bus shelter B, and your car will be returned to you promptly. It's a good option if you want one thing less to think about after landing.
- Terminal Car Parks: For a short walk back to your car, these offer direct access to the terminals. The T123 Terminal Car Park connects to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via a covered bridge, which works well if you're arriving at the international terminal or flying with Qantas or Virgin Australia. The T4 Terminal Car Park is also within walking distance from Terminal 2, making it a good option if you're departing or returning on an international flight. Both locations offer a mix of open-air and undercover bays.
- Premium Car Parks: These are the closest self-park bays to the terminal doors, located on Level 1 of both the T123 and T4 Car Parks. You park your own car and keep your keys, making it a familiar option for frequent travellers. If you’re arriving home with extra luggage or travelling with kids, the short walk back to your car makes things easier, especially during early mornings or peak times. Every bay is fully undercover, so it’s also a comfortable choice in hot or wet weather.
- Melbourne Airport Valet: Don’t want to think about where you left your car after landing? Valet parking is the quickest way out. Located on Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, you just collect your bags and walk straight to your waiting car. No need to search for a bay or carry luggage further than you have to. You can also ask about optional car cleaning if you’d like to return to a freshly cleaned vehicle.
- Qantas Valet: If you’re flying Qantas, this valet option keeps your car closest to Terminal 1. It operates from Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, right near Terminal 1, so after you land, you’re only a short walk to your vehicle. The service is open to all travellers, but if you’re a Qantas Frequent Flyer, you can also earn points each time you park here. Optional car cleaning is available too, so you can return to a freshly cleaned car.Sorting out your airport car parking early can make travel day feel a lot more straightforward.
