Overview

We have transformed the way travellers stay informed, introducing a new level of accessibility and independence for passengers who are Deaf, hard of hearing, neurodivergent or who prefer information in another language.

We’re proud to be the first airport in Australia to introduce PAstream, a new Smart Phone Hearing Augmentation system that sends real-time terminal and flight announcements directly to passengers’ mobile phone or Bluetooth-connected hearing device.

PAstream is now available in Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and will be rolled out across Terminal 1 in 2026.

A more accessible way to travel

Airports can be busy and overwhelming environments, and traditional public announcements don’t always meet the needs of every traveller.

PAsteam changes that by sending Public Address Announcements as messages, presented as either audio or text on the passenger’s phone. These can be read back as text messages, including different languages for non-English speaking travellers, or for passengers in the International Terminal, messages that have been announced in other languages will also be available to be replayed on their phone or through their Bluetooth connected hearing device.

With PAstream, passengers can:

  • Receive easy to read flight and terminal updates anywhere in the terminal
  • Replay announcements on demand, including foreign language announcements in the International Terminal
  • Access text translations in different languages
  • Stay informed through your mobile phone or Bluetooth-connected hearing device
  • Choose which terminal zones you want updates from
  • Shop, dine or relax without worrying about missing a boarding call

How it works

Using PAStream is simple:

  1. Scan the QR code in the terminal to connect.
  2. Your device will automatically detect the zone you are in. You can adjust this at any time.
  3. Announcements appear instantly as text on your phone, and audio can be played through your chosen device.
  4. Messages remain stored in your feed, marked with a green dot until read.
  5. You can translate message text into your chosen language with a single tap.

PAstream works on any internet-enabled smartphone or tablet. No additional equipment or apps are required.

Designed with accessibility at the centre

This technology is a major step forward in inclusive travel, offering real benefits for passengers who are:

  • Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Blind or low vision
  • Neurodivergent
  • Non-English speaking
  • Travelling with cognitive or sensory sensitivities

By providing direct, personalised notifications, PAstream helps reduce stress, removes reliance on audio-only announcements and ensures every traveller can access the same critical information.

It also supports Melbourne Airport’s journey toward becoming a silent airport, helping create a calmer and more welcoming experience for everyone.
