Overview
Some moments at the airport can catch you off guard. It could be a farewell that hits harder than you expected, news from home that arrives just as you're about to board, or simply the feeling that the world is moving very fast and you'd like it to slow down, just for a minute.
As a 24/7 domestic and international airport, Melbourne Airport gets busy. We see millions of people come through every year, from first-time solo flyers to families and seasoned travellers. For all its excitement, we know that travel can also bring up things that are hard to carry on your own. That is exactly why we have the Airport Chaplaincy service, one you can access completely free.
What Are Airport Chaplains?
An airport chaplain is someone trained to offer support in one of the busiest, most unpredictable environments there is. At Melbourne Airport, that means a team on site every single day, ready to listen and help, free of charge and in complete confidence, regardless of your background or belief.
Martyn leads the Melbourne Airport Chaplaincy Team. He spent more than 15 years with The Salvation Army and nearly a decade as a volunteer chaplain with Victoria Police. The team around him brings the same depth of personal and practical experience. Together, they have worked with people through some of life's harder moments right across Australia.
You do not need to hold any particular belief to reach out. A Melbourne Airport chaplain will sit and check in with you, listen without judgement, and offer support that speaks to your practical, emotional and spiritual needs, whatever that means for you.
Who Is Melbourne Airport’s Chaplaincy Service For?
Melbourne Airport’s Chaplaincy service is for everyone. You don’t need to meet a checklist, belong to a belief system, or have any particular reason before you can walk up and say hello. They’re here for the entire airport community, passengers and the people who keep this place running.
In practical terms, that means:
- Travellers passing through, arriving, departing, or waiting for someone
- Families moving through the airport together
- Older travellers or those who find busy environments difficult to manage
- International visitors who are far from home and need a familiar kind of human support
- Airport staff members who sometimes need someone to talk to
The Chaplaincy team is also the first point of contact when something more serious happens. In the event of a critical incident at the airport, they step in immediately to provide support and connect people with the right help. It’s a role they take seriously, and one they’re trained for.
If moving through the airport itself feels like too much, our free Airport Assist service is there for that too. It gets you between the car parks, terminals and ground transport hubs, at no cost and with a friendly face alongside you the whole way.
What Can You Talk to Them About?
Honestly, you can talk to them about anything. There is no issue too small and no feeling too hard to put into words. The Chaplaincy team is trained to meet you wherever you are, whether that’s a practical problem that needs solving or something that simply feels too heavy to carry on your own.
Here are some of the everyday moments they help with:
- A delay that gives you too much time to sit with your thoughts
- The anxiety of flying for the first time, or after a long time away
- A goodbye at the gate that left you more undone than you expected
- News from home that arrived at the worst possible moment
- The stress of travelling with young children when everything feels like too much
- A difficult journey behind you, and no idea how you feel about what comes next
- Simply needing 5 minutes with someone who will listen
Whatever brings you to them, the conversation stays between you. Everything is confidential, and there is never any pressure to share more than you want to.
Where Do You Find the Chaplaincy Team at Melbourne Airport?
The Chaplaincy office is on Level 2 in Terminal 2. If you head there and no one is in, do not worry. Just call the team directly on +61 3 9297 1488, and someone will respond. That number is monitored around the clock, every day of the year, across all airport terminals.
For anyone who needs a quiet moment alone, Melbourne Airport also has two 24/7 multi-denominational prayer rooms. Both are free to use and open to everyone, regardless of faith. You'll find them in:
- Ground Floor between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3
- Inside Terminal 2, after security, opposite Café Sol
Not sure where to go or which way to head? Track down one of our Experience Ambassadors in the terminals and ask for help. They know this airport inside out and are always happy to point you in the right direction.
Take a Breath and Talk to Our Chaplaincy Team
Melbourne Airport’s Chaplaincy team is there on the good days and the harder ones. Most people never need them, but knowing they're there means that whatever comes up during your visit, you don't have to sit with it alone. That is what genuine care looks like. Just people looking out for people.
The Chaplaincy is just one part of what makes Melbourne Airport what it is. From the people who greet you at the gate to the team that steps in when you need them most, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. If you want to see more of it, follow Melbourne Airport on social media and subscribe to our newsletters.
