Overview
There are plenty of reasons early flights just make sense. You beat the peak-hour traffic, the terminals are quieter, and if you’re only flying interstate, you land with the whole day still ahead of you. The smarter move is making sure the start of the trip matches the rest of it. For travellers driving to Melbourne Airport, that's easier than it sounds.
Drive in the day before, leave your car in one of our onsite car parks and check into one of the hotels right within the Melbourne Airport precinct. By the time your alarm goes off, you’re just a short walk away from check-in.
Why Stay at a Melbourne Airport Hotel the Night Before an Early Flight?
Staying at a Melbourne Airport hotel the night before an early flight keeps the morning simple. You finish the drive the day before, settle in for an overnight stay, and wake up already inside the precinct rather than leaving the Melbourne CBD before sunrise and joining the Tullamarine Freeway in the dark.
- You get more sleep. Without the drive factored into your morning, your alarm can go off later than it would if you were travelling in from home.
- You start the day with more time to focus on bags and check-in, rather than fitting the drive, parking and terminal walk into the first stretch of the morning.
- You sort parking before the early start, so the morning is focused on getting from your hotel to the terminal.
- You can make the night before feel like part of the trip with hotel features like room service, a cafe, a function room, a swimming pool or a sauna available across the hotels.
- You get the practical extras too, like 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi and rewards points, which are especially useful if you're a regular traveller flying out of Melbourne International Airport.
Some travellers use it as a reason to come in earlier in the day altogether. You could stop in at URBNSurf, grab a bite in one of the many dining options near the airport, and then head back to your hotel before the early start the next morning.
How Far Is Each Melbourne Airport Hotel from the Terminals?
Every hotel within the precinct is within walking distance of the terminals. How far that walk is depends on which hotel you stay at and which Melbourne Airport terminal you're heading to.
Here’s what you’ll find onsite:
- PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport sits on Arrival Drive above the T123 Car Park and connects directly to the domestic and international terminals via the Ground Floor of the T123 Car Park. The lifts are located opposite the car rental offices.
- NOVOTEL Melbourne Airport on Grants Road is approximately 450 metres from Terminal 4 (domestic Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways) via a covered walkway, 800 metres from Terminal 3 (domestic Virgin Australia), 950 metres from Terminal 2 (all international flights) and 1.2 kilometres from Terminal 1 (domestic Qantas). A complimentary airport shuttle service to the terminals runs 24 hours a day.
- ibis Styles Melbourne Airport is in the same Grants Road building as NOVOTEL, with both hotels operating under their own brand and room tier.
- Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport, part of IHG, is on Centre Road and about 400 metres from the domestic and international terminals. A complimentary shuttle bus is available for guests who'd rather ride than walk.
- ibis budget Melbourne Airport is on Caldwell Drive, between 500 metres and 1 kilometre from the terminals, depending on which one you're heading to.
NOVOTEL and ibis Styles are the newest hotels in the precinct, having opened in July 2024. If you'd like more options nearby, Mantra Tullamarine on Trade Park Drive and Quest Melbourne Airport on Annandale Road are also worth considering.
Which Melbourne Airport Parking Option Is Right for Your Trip?
The right Melbourne Airport parking product for your trip comes down to two things: how long you're away and how close to your terminal you want to be. Our onsite car parks cover both short-term and long-term parking, so whatever your preferences are or however long your trip is, there's an option that fits.
- Value Car Parks are the most affordable onsite parking options and are well suited to longer stays. Both are open-air car parks accessible via Exit 18 from the Tullamarine Freeway and have a free bus service running every 15 minutes, 24/7. The Value North Car Park has two entry points via Airport Drive or Mercer Drive. The free bus stops near Terminal 1 for Qantas domestic, with a short walk to Terminal 2 for international flights, and near Terminal 4 for Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways, with a short walk to Terminal 3 for Virgin Australia. The Value South Car Park is accessed via Airport Drive and is the more direct option for Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 travellers, with its free bus service heading straight to the T4 Transport Hub.
- Terminal Car Parks have two locations, each directly serving the terminals closest to them. The T123 Terminal Car Park connects to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via a covered link bridge, a straightforward walk to check-in, whether you're flying Qantas from T1, heading overseas from T2, or travelling with Virgin Australia from T3. The T4 Terminal Car Park is 100 metres from Terminal 4, right for Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways passengers, as well as some Virgin Australia flights. Both offer a mix of open-air and undercover parking.
- Premium Car Parks offer fully undercover bays in prime locations on Level 1 of the T123 and T4 Car Parks. These are the closest self-parking spots to the terminal entrances. Park up the night before, and on departure morning, it's a short walk from your car straight to check-in.
- Melbourne Airport Valet is available 24/7 from Level 1 of the T123 Car Park. Drive in the evening before your flight, hand your keys to the team, and the parking is sorted for the whole trip. When you land, make your way to Level 1, and the team will bring your car around. Optional car cleaning can be added to your booking so you drive home in a freshly cleaned car.
- Qantas Valet is also on Level 1 of the T123 Car Park. It’s positioned closest to the Terminal 1 entrance for Qantas domestic, but it’s open to all travellers regardless of airline. The service runs from 5 AM to 1 AM. Optional car cleaning is also available here while you're away.
How Do You Pair Melbourne Airport Parking with Accommodation?
Pairing Melbourne Airport parking with a hotel stay works best when both are planned together from the start. Parking can be booked up to 12 months in advance, so there's no reason to leave it until after the hotel is sorted. Online rates are also usually better than drive-up rates at the gate, and booking early gives you more choice across our onsite options.
Here's what's worth knowing before you confirm both bookings:
- When you book parking online, you'll receive a QR code by email to scan at the boom gate on arrival and again on the way out. Save it to your phone, and it's one less thing to think about on departure morning.
- Every online booking includes a grace period. For stays over 4 hours, that's a 2-hour buffer on both ends of your booked window. If the drive in on the night you arrive runs longer than expected, or your return flight comes in late, you won't be charged extra within that buffer.
- For trips where the return leg is genuinely unpredictable, the Overstay Guarantee is worth adding at the time of booking. For a small upfront fee, it covers overstay charges if your return is delayed by an airline cancellation where no replacement flight was offered, a government-mandated border closure, or a physical illness that prevents you from flying home. Approved refunds are processed within 14 working days.
- You can amend or cancel your booking via the My Bookings page up to 2 hours before your booked arrival. Already parked and staying longer than expected? You can extend your stay through the same page before your booked exit time.
- All our onsite car parks have Accessible Parking bays, positioned as close as possible to terminal entrances, lifts and bus stops. Need special assistance on either end of your trip? You can book Melbourne Airport Assist to help you from the car park or bus stop to check-in on departure or from baggage claim back to your car or bus stop when you land.
While some hotel stays do include parking and offer a complimentary airport shuttle service, the return journey is where onsite parking at Melbourne Airport makes the biggest difference. When you land, you don't have to pick up your car from the hotel before you can head home. Once you're through arrivals, it's straight to your car park, a scan of your QR code at the exit gate, and you're on the road.
