Overview
If you've driven in during school holidays or tried to pick someone up on the Friday of a long weekend, you know how busy Melbourne Airport gets. And it just keeps getting busier. Since international travel reopened after the pandemic, we’ve broken passenger records again and again. December 2025 was the busiest month in the airport's history, with 3,421,195 passengers through its terminals.
School breaks, national and Victorian holidays, long weekends, and major events all push those numbers up, but none of that needs to catch you off guard. Melbourne Airport has onsite parking options that suit all kinds of travel year-round. The best part? You can book parking online up to 12 months before you fly and take advantage of better rates than drive-up.
When Is Melbourne Airport at Its Busiest?
Melbourne Airport is at its busiest during school holidays, public holidays, long weekends, and the summer and Christmas period. In the 2024-2025 financial year, over 36 million passengers came through the terminals. Friday 24 January 2025 saw 122,751 passengers through in a single day, ahead of the Australia Day long weekend and the Australian Open final that year.
These are the periods when the airport is consistently at its peak:
- December and January are the busiest months of the year. Australians head overseas for summer, inbound visitors arrive for the holiday season, and Melbourne hosts world-class sporting events, including the Australian Open in January. In December 2025 alone, 5,596 international flights operated in or out of the international terminal.
- March also gets busy, with the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix drawing international visitors, and the Labour Day long weekend adding domestic travellers to the mix. In March 2026, Melbourne Airport recorded more than 1 million international passengers for the first time, with over 3.1 million people passing through the terminals in total.
- April is when the Easter school holiday period, the AFL Gather Round in Adelaide and sometimes the Anzac Day long weekend overlap. As they did in 2025, more than 2 million domestic travellers and international passengers came through, with 729,000 travelling the week of Anzac Day. International passenger numbers were up 24 per cent on the same period in 2024.
- June and July bring the winter school holidays, and Victorian families tend to move in one direction, out of Victoria and on to somewhere warmer. Queensland, New Zealand, and Bali are among the most popular destinations, and Melbourne Airport typically welcomes around 1.7 million passengers across the two-week break.
- September and October are busier than most people expect. The spring school holidays, combined with the AFL finals, drive domestic passenger figures higher. October 2024 saw more than 2 million domestic passengers alongside 974,713 international arrivals, a record for that month.
Long weekends throughout the year follow a predictable pattern. The Queen's Birthday, Melbourne Cup week, and Labour Day all produce noticeable spikes in take-offs and landings. The Friday before any long weekend is one of the busiest days on the calendar. When those weekends roll around, flights to Brisbane and Sydney are among the most heavily booked.
Why Does Parking Onsite at Melbourne Airport Make the Most Sense?
During busy periods, onsite parking at Melbourne Airport makes the most sense because you’re not adding an external transfer to a journey that’s already moving at full pace. The drive in and out is direct off the Tullamarine Freeway, and you can park close enough and walk straight to your terminal, or take the free bus from the Value Car Park a few minutes away.
Here is why that works in your favour when the airport is busy:
- Every onsite car park is either a short walk from check-in or a free shuttle bus ride. Either way, you’re within the precinct, which means your journey starts and ends on your terms.
- As a 24/7 Australian airport, we have onsite parking to match your schedule, whether you're on a 5 AM domestic departure or landing on a late-night international flight.
- Travelling as a family with young kids, heading off solo, or doing a quick same-day return? Whatever the trip looks like, there's an onsite parking option that fits your budget and gets you to your terminal without any detours.
- All our car parks onsite have Accessible parking bays positioned as close as possible to terminal entrances, lifts, and bus stops. When the terminals are packed, those extra few metres matter more than usual.
- Landing and driving out are just as easy. Your car is already there. So once you’re through arrivals, it’s straight to the car park and onto the road.
- Driving in from a regional town? Melbourne Airport car parks connect directly to the Tullamarine Freeway, so the drive in and the drive home are both simple.
How Do You Plan Melbourne Airport Parking During Peak Periods?
The best thing you can do if you’re flying out during a busy travel period is to sort your parking way ahead of time. Book online, know which car park you are heading to, and give yourself more drive time than usual.
- Book as early as you can. You can book parking online up to 12 months in advance. The earlier you book, the better the rate you get compared to paying drive-up rates at the gate.
- Save the QR code to your phone's photo gallery or digital wallet. After booking, you’ll receive a QR code by email. Scan it at the entry gate on the way in, and again at the exit gate on the way out. It’s faster than tapping a card.
- Take advantage of the grace period. All online bookings come with a grace period. For stays under 4 hours, you get a 1-hour buffer on either side. If you’re staying longer, that extends to 2 hours on both ends. The grace period applies automatically, so if the drive in runs long, you will not be hit with extra charges for arriving a bit late.
- Add the Overstay Guarantee when booking. The Overstay Guarantee is an optional add-on that covers overstay charges if your return is delayed by a flight cancellation where no replacement flight was offered, a government-mandated border closure, or illness that prevents you from flying home. Approved refunds are processed within 14 working days.
- Give yourself at least 60 minutes of extra time on the drive in. There are ongoing upgrades across the precinct, including works for the Third Runway Project, that affect Tullamarine road conditions on the approach. A quick check of road delays and disruptions before you leave home means no surprises once you are on the freeway.
If your plans change before you’ve parked, you can update your booking for free on the My Bookings page up to 2 hours before your scheduled entry time. Already parked and need to park longer? Log into My Bookings and extend your stay anytime before your booked exit time.
Which Parking Option Should You Book During Melbourne Airport's Busiest Travel Times?
The best parking option during Melbourne Airport's busiest travel times depends on your terminal, your trip length, and your budget. Melbourne Airport has onsite car parks covering everything from open-air budget parking to valet service, each suited to a different kind of traveller and a different kind of trip.
- Value Car Park: Travelling on a budget? This open-air car park is Melbourne Airport's most affordable onsite parking option. It's easy to reach from Mercer Drive or Airport Drive, and for longer stays during busy periods, it's hard to beat the price. A free bus service runs every 15 minutes, 24/7, taking you to bus stops near Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. If you're flying Qantas domestically or travelling internationally from Terminal 2, the Terminal 1 stop is the one you want. For Rex, Jetstar, Link Airways or Virgin Australia, hop off at the Terminal 4 stop.
- Value Express: Available during school holidays and other peak travel periods, this seasonal valet-style service in the Value Car Park takes the one thing that slows people down at a busy car park off your plate entirely. Just drive to Bus Stop B, hand your keys to one of our team and hop on the next bus. When you land, it'll be ready and waiting for you. You can pre-book Value Express online or upgrade when you pull in if spots are still available.
- Terminal Car Parks: You’ll find these multi-level car parks in two locations, both a short distance from the terminals they serve. The T123 Terminal Car Park connects to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via a covered link bridge. So if you’re flying Qantas from T1, heading off internationally from T2 or catching a Virgin Australia flight from T3, this is your car park. Flying Jetstar, Rex, Link Airways or Virgin Australia from Terminal 4? The T4 Terminal Car Park is just 100 metres from the terminal entrance. Both offer a mix of open-air and undercover parking bays.
- Premium Car Parks: For more efficient parking, Premium parking is the way to go. The Premium Car Parks offer the closest self-parking bays to the terminal entrances, sitting on Level 1 of both the T123 and T4 Car Parks. Pull into your bay, grab your bags, and you’re steps from the terminal. Every bay is also fully undercover, handy when Melbourne weather decides not to cooperate.
- Melbourne Airport Valet: Want parking off your hands? Save time and let the Melbourne Airport Valet team do it for you. We’ll bring your car back on your return so you don’t have to remember where you parked. Just drive to Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, leave your keys with our team and walk straight to check-in. Our team is there 24/7, and the service is open to all travellers, no matter which terminal you are flying from. Optional car cleaning is also available, so you can come home to a freshly cleaned car after your trip.
- Qantas Valet: Located on Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, this valet option sits closest to the Terminal 1 entrance. Drive in, hand your keys to the team and walk to check-in. The service is open to all travellers, not just Qantas passengers. Want to come home to a clean car? You can arrange a car wash here while you’re away, so you have one less thing to deal with when you land.
