Melbourne Airport celebrated as Jetstar’s inaugural service from Zhengzhou arrived this afternoon carrying travellers on a Boeing 787 aircraft.
Jetstar Airways is the only Australian airline flying direct to Zhengzhou and will operate two weekly services on Wednesday and Saturday, adding a combined 70,000 seats flying both-ways annually.
Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation, Simon Gandy, welcomed the addition of this new Chinese destination, which makes Zhengzhou the 11th destination in mainland China accessible via a non-stop flight from Melbourne Airport.
“Today’s inaugural flight by Jetstar is a win for Melbourne, continuing the strong growth in the number of visitors from China heading to the world’s most livable city,” Mr Gandy said.
“Not only is this a boon for Victorian tourism, but Victorian travellers have a growing number of destinations in China to choose from.
“Zhengzhou is the economic center of the Henan province located in central China and is home to the famous Henan Museum and Shaolin Temple.
“With a population of about nine million residents it is regarded as one of China’s industrial hubs. It is home to the famous manufacturing enterprise Foxconn supplying 80 per cent of all iPhones in the world. We feel fortunate to be the first Australian city to be connected to this important destination in China via a direct air link.
“China is Melbourne’s largest international passenger market with more than 1.2 million passengers travelling between Melbourne Airport and China in the 2016-17 financial year. For years we have experienced consistent international passenger growth and to build on that by adding a completely new service is fantastic for both airlines and for travellers.
“To keep up with international passenger growth over the next decade, we are adding capacity and significantly improving our airport to ensure we can continue to meet the needs of our customers as more travellers visit Melbourne and Victoria.
