Overview
Heading off on a holiday is always an exciting time, but as any seasoned traveller knows, the buzz at Tullamarine Airport kicks up a gear during school holidays, long weekends and major events. If you're driving in during one of these peak travel periods, having a plan in place helps keep things simple on the day.
With a few Melbourne Airport parking options available onsite, it’s worth thinking through which one suits your travel plans before you get here. Whether it’s a quick weekend trip or you’re parking for longer, sorting where you leave your car ahead of time sets you up not only for a smoother arrival but also for a better parking experience overall.
How Do You Plan Airport Parking During Peak Travel Periods?
When the airport is at its busiest, you plan airport parking by thinking through the key parts early. That means working out what time to leave home, choosing the right parking option and factoring in a few more things that might slow you down on the day.
Here are a few simple tips to help you plan ahead:
- Pre-book your airport car parking early. You can book parking online up to 12 months ahead, which is especially helpful during peak periods when more people are driving in and flying out. Booking early also gives you access to better parking rates than drive-up pricing and more choice across our onsite car parks.
- Match the parking option you choose to your terminal. Knowing which airport terminal your airline uses helps you choose the closest car park in advance. This way, you're not rushing between terminals or backtracking across the airport precinct on a busy day. Qantas domestic flights use Terminal 1, while all international flights depart from Terminal 2. Domestic Virgin Australia operates from Terminal 3, and Terminal 4 services Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways.
- Check live traffic and road closures around the Tullamarine Freeway. Use Google Maps to check live traffic conditions and avoid unexpected delays on your way in. Keep an eye out for ongoing roadworks around Tullamarine, which may lead to detours or temporary lane closures near the airport precinct. To avoid cutting it close, add up to 60 minutes to your travel time. Reviewing the car park maps in advance can also help you get familiar with entry points before you start your drive.
- Take advantage of the grace period included with all online bookings. If you're driving in during a busy travel window, there’s no need to adjust your booking for minor changes to your arrival or return time. For short stays under four hours, you can arrive up to one hour early or leave up to one hour late. If you're staying longer than four hours, the window extends to two hours either side of your booking, which is helpful if traffic holds you up or your return flight lands later than expected.
- Add the Overstay Guarantee for extra peace of mind for your return. Peak travel periods can come with unexpected disruptions. The Overstay Guarantee is available when booking parking online and covers additional parking charges if you’re delayed due to flight cancellations, border closures or last-minute illnesses. Just make sure to keep your documentation in case you need to submit a refund request.
- Save the Parking QR code to your phone. Your booking confirmation email will include a Parking QR code to scan at the boom gate. Saving it to your phone means you won’t need to search for it or rely on reception at the entry. It’s a small step, but it will help keep things moving during peak times.
- Leave extra time to get from your car to check-in. During peak periods, traffic can build across the airport precinct, not just near the car parks. Arriving early helps allow for possible delays and gives you more time to find a parking space and make your way to the terminal. The walk to check-in may also take longer if you're managing luggage, travelling with kids or dealing with unpredictable weather.
What Is the Best Melbourne Airport Parking Option When the Airport Is Busy?
With more cars moving through the precinct, the best parking option is one that’s right on site. Melbourne Airport offers a range of short-term parking and long-term parking options you can pre-book, each one designed to suit different types of trips and travel needs.
Here’s a quick breakdown to help you choose what works best for your kind of travel:
- Value Car Park: A practical choice for longer trips, this open-air car park is Melbourne Airport’s most affordable parking option. It has entrances along Mercer Drive and Airport Drive and includes a free bus service that runs every 15 minutes, 24/7. The free bus service stops near Terminals 1 and 4, with a short walk to check-in from there. If you’re flying Qantas domestically from Terminal 1 or departing internationally from Terminal 2, the Terminal 1 stop is the most convenient. The Terminal 4 stop is ideal for travellers heading to domestic flights from Terminals 3 or 4, including Jetstar, Rex, Link Airways and Virgin Australia.
During school holidays and other peak travel times, Value Express is also available here. It’s a seasonal valet parking service within the Value Car Park, where you drop off your car near Bus Stop B, and one of our friendly staff will park it for you. You can book it online or upgrade on arrival, subject to availability. - Terminal Car Parks: Planning to walk straight to check-in? These multi-level car parks are both right near the terminals. The T123 Car Park links to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via a covered bridge, which works well if you're flying with Qantas, Virgin Australia or from the international terminal. If you’re heading out from Terminal 4, the T4 Car Park is just 100 metres from the entrance and suits travellers flying with Jetstar, Rex, Link Airways or Virgin Australia. Both locations offer a mix of open-air and undercover parking spaces.
- Premium Car Parks: Located on Level 1 of both the T123 and T4 Car Parks, these prime spots give you easy access to the terminal entry points. It’s also a self-park option, which means you keep your keys and park on your own. This can be helpful for early departures or if you prefer a familiar routine when it’s busier than usual. All bays are fully undercover, so it’s a practical pick if you’re carrying luggage or travelling with kids.
- Melbourne Airport Valet: If you'd rather not spend time finding a bay, this valet service makes the handover quick and simple. Just drive to Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, hand over your keys, and walk straight into the terminal. There's no need to carry bags far or remember where you parked. Our team handles the parking for you. You can also ask about optional car cleaning if you'd like to return to a freshly cleaned car.
- Qantas Valet: This valet service operates from Level 1 of the T123 Car Park, with bays closest to the Terminal 1 entrance for Qantas domestic flights. There’s no need to book ahead. Just drive up, hand over your keys and walk across to check-in. The service is available to all travellers, but Qantas Frequent Flyers can earn points every time they use the service. Car cleaning is also offered as an optional add-on while you're away.
Need parking that supports mobility access? All Melbourne Airport car parks include accessible parking facilities, with marked bays near terminal entrances, lifts and bus stops. These spaces are available to travellers with a valid Disability Parking Permit.
Not planning to park for long? If you're just dropping off or picking someone up, there are dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones right outside each terminal. You can also use the free parking in the Wait Zone on Mercer Drive for up to 60 minutes.
Can I Adjust My Parking Booking If My Travel Plans Change?
Yes. If your plans change, you can update your entry time, cancel or modify your booking through My Bookings up until two hours before your booked entry time. If you're already parked and your return is delayed, you can extend your stay online at any time. Just have your booking reference handy. Any extra time will be added to your final charges.
